Several photography exhibitions + photography book: Two Americas

Two Americas: Part I exhibited works Two Americas Part II exhibited works

The undertaking Two Americas involves several photographic exhibitions and a book, in which photographer Klaus A J Riederer examines (based mainly on his own experience) how the cultures, people and their lifestyles, surroundings and nature in Unites States and Latin America differ? How the differences have come to existence and evolved over time and what will they be like in the future? For the undertaking photographer Riederer has obtained (so far) two art grants, from Oscar Öflunds Stiftelse for the exhibition part I, and from the Finnish Cultural Foundation for preparing his first photography book Two Americas and the Part II of the exhibition Two Americas. He was the first photographer ever granted that special type of residence grant (first ones given early 1990s). It involved, e.g., housing at the old apartment of the world-famous artist August Strindberg for the period of Feb. 1 - July 31, 2004.

Sponsors interested in the undertaking are given PR-visibility in the book, in the exhibitions they desire and on the photographers www-pages, as well as depending on the form of sponsorship, user experience on equipment and material. More information is is given in the attachments, at the bottom of this document.

Sponsor is given: PR-visibility, art photography prints / books, user testing

The sponsor of the undertaking gets in direct relation to its investment:

  • PR-visibility (company logos, advertisements etc.) in the photography book Two Americas, on exhibitions and www-pages
  • Free copies of the photography book Two Americas, reductions of further copies
  • Exhibited prints (currently: Part II and Part I) of the photography exhibition Two Americas.
  • User experience, material and equipment testing data on given / lent materials / equipment.

Sponsor is asked for: Equipment / material investments

The sponsor can freely invest on the undertaking by:

  • Donating (also second-hand) equipment to the undertaking or giving substantial reductions thereof
  • Donating (also expired but still usable) materials to the undertaking or giving substantial reductions thereof
  • Donating services to the undertaking or giving substantial reductions thereof

Realization: Divided into several parts

At this point, the sponsor has a possibility to support the third and/or the book Two Americas, depending on the sponsors possibilities and suitability.

Part I

The first exhibition of the series was held at Savoy theatre, Helsinki, Sept. 11th - Oct. 4th, 2003. The grand opening was on Sept. 11th 6-8 p.m.; mounting of the works was done already on Sept. 8th. All the photographs were hand-made (analogously, using an enlarger and self-made heavy-duty development tanks) by photographer Klaus A J Riederer on August & September, 2003. The exhibited works were 10 superglossy Ilfochrome (prev. Cibachrome) silver bleach color polyesterfilm prints in size 50*60 cm2 (frames 60*80 cm2) and 7 silver gelatin (black-and-white) non-toned polyethylene resin coated paper prints in size 58*88 cm2 (frames 70*100 cm2). He had taken the photographs in USA (Sept. - Oct. 1998, May - June 2001) and South America (Oct. 1998 - Jan. 1999). The sponsors were named on the main information desk at the gallery, in the Book of works, www-pages of the exhibition (with active links). The press release was sent to all suitable printed and on-line newspapers (~30), the exhibition was also informed on the fall program brochure (circulation over 40000 copies) and the www-pages of the Savoy-theatre and photographer's own www-pages (more than 2000 hits in the year 2003). Riederer distributed also ca. 3500 4-color offset printed and UV-lacquired invitations for the exhibition and inviting personally hundreds of people.

Part II

The second exhibition was held at the International Cultural Centre Caisa, Mikonkatu 17 C / Vuorikatu 14, Helsinki, Finland on September 28 – October 14, 2005. The exhibition and a photograph thereof is advertised in the printed Fall program of International Cultural Centre Caisa, and there will be large-sized poster (with the sponsors) printed for the exhibition.

Other exhibitions

Following the line of the previous exhibitions of photographer Klaus A J Riederer, also the exhibition Two Americas will be composed of a series of exhibition that will reproduce the same motive, but evoked by different photographs. This approach is meaningful, because of the extensive material and the fact that it reflects the wide-ranging creativity of the photographer. Moreover, he wants to give as many as possible to see high quality art photography, of which the most loyal visitors can enjoy more than once. This idea was accomplished well in the Spell of Mountains exhibition series, which was visited by more than 250 000 people at five Helsinki City libraries.

Photography art book

A photography book is even more valuable and enduring merit than large-size self-made exhibited prints. The book will be the culmination point of the undertaking Two Americas and it will not only be the absolute technical apex but also the artistic pinnacle considering the whole work, the produces photographs, layout and content. The author's edition will show all his competence, as photographer Riederer will make the book into offset-ready pdf-format.

Even today, offset printing offers the only viable solution for high-quality and durable color and black-and-white printed publications. However, the process of making such an art book of more than 200 pages requires craftmanship and resources, and hence sponsors play a crucial role.

Because of the recent new upgrades on scanning, printing and graphical design facilities by the performing party (Klaus A J Riederer), the book project (i.e., layout making) will run in full force starting at end part of year 2005, as soon as the preparations for the many exhibitions will be over.

Organization: performing party & collaborators

The performing party is Dr. Klaus A J Riederer. The parties interested in collaboration with the second exhibition and/or book are named below in alphabetical order. More sponsors / collaborators are sought actively for the valuable photojournalistic fine art undertaking. Naturally, a cooperation is built in which the parties interest do not collide, but complete/reinforce each other.
